FAQ
GENERAL
Who do I contact about issues in my building (electric/safety/trash/other)?
Firstly, if there is an emergency in your building or on CERN site, always call the CERN fire brigade (74444 or +41 22 76 74444).
If there is a non-urgent issue in your building, please contact the TSO of the building. The TSO is specified on the entrance of a building, or you can also find them on the CERN GIS.
For TSOs please see the section “Safety Inspections” underneath.
Where can I find official documentation about safety?
All safety documents can be found on the HSE website.
Where are the fire extinguishers and defibrillators located in my building?
If there is an emergency, please firstly call the CERN fire brigade (74444 or +41 22 76 74444).
On every floor in your building there must be an emergency plan for your floor, where you can find the location of fire extinguisher, defibrillators, emergency exits and location of the assembly point. If there is no emergency plan on your floor, please contact the TSO of the building.
You can also find the emergency plans for buildings on MTF, and the link to MTF is also included on GIS.
I am missing some information here, who do I contact?
For questions regarding safety, please firstly contact the safety link person of your group. On this link you can also find the safety officers of TE for different domains.
Training
What trainings do I need to work in the LHC tunnel?
The needed trainings for an area can be checked on ADaMS.
To access the LHC tunnel (access LHC-TNL) the following training are needed:
Some of these courses are in the classroom to please register early enough!
Please also always remember, that if you are doing special works, a specific training or permit can be needed. Your supervisor should be able to answer your questions if have special works to do.
Furthermore, for accessing the tunnel itself, you also need the appropriate PPE and IMPACT, see also the section “Access/Contract Information” underneath.
What trainings do I need to work at an experiment?
To apply for access to the experiments, ADaMS is used.
Depending on where you need access, you need to check on ADaMS and apply for the corresponding access permission. If you are not sure where you need access, please check with your supervisor.
What trainings do I need to work in a workshop?
There are no special trainings needed from CERN to work in a workshop. To work in a workshop, please contact the workshop supervisor first, he will be able to help you with all your questions. The workshop supervisor is listed on the entrance of the workshop.
Who do I need to contact about safety training in TE?
The person you should contact about needed training for your work is always your supervisor. If you need further assistance with trainings, please have a look at the list of the safety link person in TE and our departmental training officer (DTO).
How long are the courses valid?
Different courses at CERN have a different validity period. You can see the validity of a course on the course page the CERN learning hub, or you can print an overview of your training at IRIS (for trainings followed 10th Sep. 2018) or on HRT (before 10th Sep. 2018).
What courses do I need to take to become an emergency guide?
The training needed for becoming an emergency guide can be found on the CERN learning portal.
If you would like to become an emergency guide, please contact your supervisor and enroll for the course. After you finished the course, please also contact the TSO and the DSO that they register you in the official database and are informed.
Access/Contract information
What accesses do I need for the LHC tunnel?
The needed accesses for an area can be checked on ADaMS.
To access the LHC tunnel (access LHC-TNL) the following accesses are needed: Link to ADaMS.
Furthermore, an IMPACT is needed, for this please contact your supervisor.
For the necessary PPE please also see the questions underneath and for the necessary trainings also see the section “Training” above.
What accesses do I need for the experiments?
To apply for access to the experiments, ADaMS is used.
Depending on where you need access, you need to check on ADaMS and apply for the corresponding access permission.
For accessing experimental areas, you also need an IMPACT, please contact your supervisor about the specific access you need.
What PPE is needed to access the LHC tunnel, can I borrow it and how do I check it?
The required PPE for accessing the LHC tunnel can be found on ADaMS.
For the access to LHC-TNL the following equipment is needed:
- Helmet
- Frontal Lamp
- Safety Shoes
- Self-Rescue Mask
- Portable ODH Detector
The PPE is your private equipment and is not allowed to be borrowed. You should check your PPE regularly yourself and let it get checked by a professional at least yearly.
Since most of the underground is a radiation area, a personal dosimeter is needed, if you are going into a controlled area, you also need an active dosimeter. For further information also see the question about dosimeter underneath.
Although on the ADaMS website it is not specified, it is highly recommended to take a mobile phone with access to the Swiss network, since in the underground there is only access to Swiss network.
It is also recommended to wear long pants underground; it is not allowed to eat or drink underground.
What PPE is needed to access the experiments?
The required PPE for the relative accesses can be found on ADaMS.
Depending on the area you must go, please check the respective PPE needed. Most of the areas require the following:
- Helmet
- Frontal Lamp
- Safety Shoes
If you are working in a radiation area, you also need a personal dosimeter and if you are working in a controlled area, you need an active dosimeter.
Although on the ADaMS website it is not specified, it is highly recommended to take a mobile phone with access to the Swiss network, since in the underground there is only access to Swiss network.
It is also recommended to wear long pants underground; it is not allowed to eat or drink underground.
Where can I apply for a dosimeter?
Before applying for a dosimeter, please check with your supervisor if you need a dosimeter in your work area. Further instruction about applying for a dosimeter can than be found on the dosimetry service website.
Which buildings belong to TE?
The buildings that belong to TE can be found on the SOS service of AIS.
Here you can find the relevant safety officers according to different categories, at the TSO overview you can find all buildings belonging to TE.
What is an IMPACT or a VIC and when do I need it?
IMPACT is a web-based tool that must be used to declare work activities. A VIC is a Joint Inspection Visit (Visite d’inspection Commune) to the location of the activity to validate and adapting the safety measures that are planned for the activity.
Every task that carries high risk potential has to be declared inside an IMPACT activity to ensure safe working conditions, a proper management of the risks and of the history of activities. A VIC can be added after an IMPACT has been created and must include the necessary information about participants, hazards, risks, etc..
You can find more information about IMPACT activities and VICs under the CERN learning hub.
Safety Inspection
Where can I find the reports for periodic safety inspections of buildings?
All safety reports for your buildings can be found on SAILOR.
You can also find the safety reports for buildings on MTF, and the link to MTF is also included on GIS.
How do I fix the issues described on the safety report of the building as TSO?
Depending on the type of the issue, please check the corresponding solution:
- Waste Removal
Please check the website of the SCE department “What goes where?” - Electrical issues
Please do not attempt to fix electrical issues yourself. See question underneath for more details. - Identification of chemical substances
Please use the tool CERES to register your chemical products. - Urgent Infrastructure issues
If you have urgent infrastructure issues please contact the CCC 72201. - General safety issues you do not know how to solve
Often there is an HSE contact person mentioned in the report, otherwise please get in contact with the safety link person of your group or the TE safety office.
How to fix the issues described in the electrical report of the building?
If there are issues within the electrical report of a building, most of the times you cannot and should not fix those issues yourself. For electrical issues you need to create a ticket on the CERN service portal. Please use the following links to create tickets about your issues, depending on if your building is
What identification do I need for a machine?
To correctly identify a machine at CERN, multiple steps need to be done before the machine can be used for production. Please also check the machine conformity part of our website.
