Hazard description

Mechanical hazards generated by machine elements, tools, loads, projections of solid or fluid materials… correspond to all the physical factors which can be the cause of an injury.

Machine conformity

Standard machines-Lifecycle

• Purchase

  

  • check availability internally (EN-MME-MA)
  • all new machines must be CE
  • instruction manual, CE declaration and CE plate must be availaible
  • EDH validation by HSE specialist
• Arrival at CERN
  • contact the maintenance department (EN-MMA-MA) for identification (installation, registration in InforEAM and fixation of the identification plate)
  • make available the following documentation (in French or in English): instruction manual, CE declaration, CE plate; the documents must be archived by the holder of the machine;
  • contact the inspection department for the initial inspection: perform the inspection, archive the report and authorise the use)
  • holder declares entry into service, write and display the workstation safety sheet and informs the authorisations of use
• Use
  • in accordance with the instruction manual
  • workstation safety sheet must be present
  • by an authorised person
  • up to date periodic inspections
  • maintenance (ensuring safe use, respect the manufacturer’s recommendations)
• Dismantling
  • sale: the machine must comply with the regulations of the purchasing country (ex: CE)
  • contact EN-MME-MA: dismantling, ensure that the machine can’t be reused
  • inform the inspection service
  • archive safety documents

Non-standard machines

For non-standard machines (standard machine purchased and modify or machine designed to meet specific need) a safety file must be available including:

• the new risk analysis
• an update of the documentation (instruction manual, plan, electrical diagram…)

TE Workshops

Workshop Responsible (WR)

The Workshop Responsible will be responsible within the Group, to ensure that:​​​​​​

• Personal Safety measures are applied;
• Conformity of machines are checked and maintained;
• Access to the Workshop’s are secured during the outside working hours. In addition, outside normal working hours, the use of workshops shall be restricted to urgent works;
• Availability at Workshop’s entrance of relevant Workshop information (name of Workshop Supervisor, Group/Section responsible, list of machines, list of persons authorised)

Workshop Supervisor (WS)

• GSI-SO-12: WS Workshop Supervisor
• The WS shall, in particular, ensure that:
  • operators are provided, for each item of the work equipment, with the necessary operating instructions, including the conditions of use as well as information concerning the main dangers and the corresponding safeguards to be implemented, and that they comply with them;
  • agreement set out in Safety Form SF-SO-12-0-1 (Member of Personnel) and SF-SO-12-0-2 (CERN contractor) is signed by an operator who is not part of his Group and who uses the workshop for the first time;

TE Workshops

At the entrance of each workshop, it has been requested to the workshop supervisor to make available:

• a list of machines with the workshop responsible, supervisor and alternate;
• list of authorized people (separate staff from contractors);
• related safety forms duly signed;
• the list of hazard pictograms (format A3 and plasticized) “TE PDs Mécaniques à afficher”

All machine tools must be equipped with workstation safety sheet (A4 format and plasticized) and with compliance sticker delivered by HSE. Workstation safety sheet for standard machine tools are available on EDMS 1756500.
